As diverse as the Performing Arts Department is, its mission is singular. The department celebrates its diversity and aims to instill in students the essential skills within the various areas of the performing arts, which are music, drama and art at Holland Middle School. These essential skills are basically the same in each area: to develop critical thinking, to help students find their level of creativity, and to assist them in the learning process and the understanding of the various elements of design. These skills are used to create effective compositions in all areas of the performing arts, instilling confidence in students abilities and helping students discover more insightful ways of viewing and analyzing their world.
It is critical for our students to recognize and understand the
creative endeavors and achievements of other artists and art forms and
to be able to explain why every work of art is vital as an expressive
effort. The visual arts easily relate to all the other academic areas.
While science, math, and history supply the facts, the arts supply the
reaction and interpretation. Through intellectual awareness of the
visual arts, students have a fuller understanding of the human soul and
condition.
