Holland Middle School has numerous Elective programs that students can choose from.
Art: Includes the fundamentals of design, drawing, painting and sculpture. Students will maintain a portfolio.
AVID: This program is designed to prepare students for high school by providing support in rigorous college-preparatory coursework. Being a part of this program requires each individual's commitment to his/her goals and to the methods taught in AVID. The AVID program has a supportive environment, which is achieved through motivational activities and encouraging relationships. Students are required to take Cornell notes in each academic core class each day, as well as carry an AVID Binder, and participate in tutorials twice a week.
BAND (Advanced/Beginner): Students in Beginner Band will start their study of music while those participating in Advanced Band will continue improving proper technique. Instruments include: Clarinets, Trumpet, Flutes, Trombone, Saxophone, and percussion. Students participate in concerts and competitions.
CHOIR: Students will develop the art of solo and choral singing, and have the chance to enter various U.I.L. competitions and concerts.
GATEWAY TO TECHNOLOGY: In this course, with the use of technology, students use appropriate design processes and techniques in manufacturing, construction, communication, energy, power, transportation, and bio-related technology. They also learn basic product marketing processes and techniques and the importance of teamwork, leadership, integrity, honesty, work habits, and organizational skills, including using teamwork to solve problems, using time management skills, and completing tasks according to established criteria.
OFFICE WORKER: Students will be assigned an office location to perform various duties that provide assistance to our school staff members. Duties may include retrieval and return of students from classrooms, processing paperwork, delivering messages and delivering teacher supply requests.
PROJECT LEAD THE WAY: This program is all about teaching and learning with hands-on projects and problem-based approaches, which adds rigor to traditional technical programs and relevance to traditional academics, like math and science. This program also provides students with reality-based knowledge necessary to pursue engineering and technology programs in college.
PUBLIC SPEAKING: This course will enhance your presentation skills and will completely change the way you think about the art and science of speaking to a group. The ending result of this class will allow students to become more polished speaker, less fearful of an audience, and have more confidence.
SPANISH I A/B: Study of the language concentrating on real life functioning use of the language as a means of communication through listening, reading, speaking and writing.
TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS: Students are given tools they will need to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. Units covered in this course include database, spreadsheet, word processing, slide show presentation, technology ethics, computer history, and graphics, with daily use of the Internet as a learning tool. Students are also taught proper keyboarding techniques and utilize online programs to build mathematics skills.
YEARBOOK: The production course is designed for students who desire to learn more about creating a quality yearbook. Topics to be covered include graphic design, photography, desktop publishing, copy-editing, and time management. Other topics to be covered include yearbook ads, theme development, content and coverage. |
